Our impact in Kitchener-Waterloo

  • The 2016 KW Tournament donated over $165,000 to 5 local agencies! - All net proceeds raised in KW stay in KW
  • Our 5 local homeless support agencies are driven by the belief that everyone should have a safe, affordable, secure place to live. Together, they work together to provide comprehensive support to the homeless of all ages, genders, and backgrounds - women and families, youth, and adults
  • They support individual’s basic needs for shelter and look for ways to assist them in finding stable housing and a life beyond poverty.
  • Together, they provide shelter to nearly 2,000 people annually and provide essential support services to thousands more each year
  • At the same time HHUG (Homelessness and Housing Umbrella Group) leads the efforts to create permanent long term community-wide solutions to homelessness. Hockey Helps the Homeless funds have allowed HHUG to remain operational through 2016
  • In Waterloo Region, an estimated 3,492 individuals are living in emergency shelters and another 2,719 households are on a housing waitlist (2013 Homeless Hub survey)

“Staff would ask me questions and I had to figure out the answers: group meetings with other men in the program; learning how to live without drugs or alcohol; and, being responsible for my decisions and behaviour. I stumbled, more than once, in and out of the program, on the street, sometimes staying at House of Friendship’s Charles Street Men’s Hostel. Throughout, the staff never judged me. They always believed I knew the answers that I was looking for. The more they heard me, the more I trusted them and the process.”  - Steve, former House of Friendship program participant, current Peer Health Worker at the Charles Street Men’s Hostel
